Daltons invest in German Moulder Technology
Kuper may not be a name immediately associated with planing and moulding machines in the UK and Ireland but this is about to change as a result of an agreement between Nottingham based woodworking machinery suppliers Daltons and German distributor/ manufacturers Kuper who are based in Rietberg.
Long associated with the supply and distribution of planer moulders from Wadkin and faced with increasing competition from imported equipment from Taiwan and the Republic of China, Daltons found themselves looking around for an alternative moulder which needed to be competitively priced without compromising the company’s standards with regard to performance, build quality and aftercare.
Sales Director Andy Walsh in particular was anxious not to devalue his own sales pitch employed so many times with regard to the advantages of buying a high quality proven machine, albeit at a comparatively high price rather than become involved with a plethora of imported models for which Daltons felt they could not honestly provide satisfactory guarantees with regard to reliability or prompt supply of spare parts.
A visit to the Kuper factory in Germany however changed all that. Daltons technical team saw a range of moulders, many of the castings for which admittedly originate in the Far East (as do parts for many other apparently “European” machines) but are in a large part German manufactured with all the added technology for which this nation are so renowned. The majority of critical moving parts, ie cutter spindles, bearings, setting systems, etc, together with bed plates, all originate and are fitted in the German factory and the machines are specified and rigorously tested to their own exacting standards and requirements. In addition the complete electrical package is of German origin and designed, supplied and fitted by Kuper.
Director Francis Dalton commented “This was a wonderful opportunity to widen our scope by offering an alternative planer moulder incorporating the very best in German technology from a proven European supplier. We have no intention of giving up on our involvement with UK manufactured machines but we are for the first time now able to offer both choice and a wider price range”.

Daltons currently have on display in their Nottingham showrooms two of the Kuper planer moulders, ie the 6-head SWT23XL5 and 5-head SWTXL5 but a wide variety of configurations are available including head sequences up to 12 heads, universal heads, and capacities up to 320 mm wide. Amongst the standard features are chrome beds, Siemens SPS touch screen controls and remote electronic display for machine set up.
